This design is based on the painting Almond Blossom. Vincent painted one of his favorite subjects as a gift: large, blooming branches against a blue sky. He painted it on the occasion of the birth of his godson, who was also named after him, Vincent Willem. As a symbol of young life, Vincent chose the branches of the almond tree, one of the earliest blooming trees, which announces spring as early as February. . With the subject, the sharp outlines and the placement of the tree in the picture plane, Van Gogh was inspired by Japanese print art.
